Talking about Transportation Access and Equity at SXSW

This past week I spent some time in Austin, Texas for South by Southwest. Not only was it a great opportunity to see people in person, but SXSW has made transportation an official track of the conference programming.

As part of that programming, I moderated a panel talking about equity and accessibility in transportation—drawing on a lot of experience of what is happening in Michigan.

The session, called New Mobility Should Mean Equitable Mobility, was hosted by Midwest House (formerly Michigan House) which produces official SXSW programming highlighting expertise and innovation happening in Michigan. Although the content was very much based in Michigan, the audience was very much representative of the national and global transportation community.

During the session, myself and the panelists covered many of the elements that impact a person’s mobility including income, gender and race. This included conversations around economic development’s role, inclusive vehicle design and route planning, and the importance of community engagement.

Overall the topic was very well received from the audience and I look forward to one day being invited back to the SXSW stage!

The promise of new mobility that is both equitable and accessible regardless of income, gender and race is already being tested in communities around the country. Panelist will discuss real world examples they've encountered, and how community engagement and technology can combine to actually make people's lives better.
